Talks over pay and conditions between unions and train operator NS have broken down again and strike action on Friday is going ahead, causing heavier traffic and deserted train stations.

A new offer by NS was rejected yesterday, prompting the train operator to suspend services on Friday across the country for safety reasons.

Access by train to Schiphol will be possible via the Utrecht Centraal- Amsterdam Zuid-Schiphol airport route. There will be four trains every hour to and from the airport until 8pm, two trains from 8pm and one service from midnight. Travellers can check their journeys on the NS travel planner.

More disruption is expected on Friday because regional public transport workers in Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel are also on strike over pay.

Regional operator Arriva has said travellers in Friesland and Groningen must expect disrupted bus services. Regional trains schedules will operate as normal.

Local media are reporting heavier traffic and empty train and bus stations on Friday. If negotiations between NS and the unions are not resumed, strike action will go ahead on Tuesday September 13 and Thursday September 15 as well.
