Judges in Lelystad have jailed a 26-year-old woman for three years, to be followed by psychiatric treatment, for her role in the death of her eight-month-old baby Yara, who died after ingesting the drug GHB.

Police could not establish how the drug came to be in the baby’s bottle, but said Van der P had taken GHB, cocaine and crack that evening and may have passed out for a time.

She alerted the emergency services in the middle of the night after realizing her daughter was ‘very heavy’. The baby died in hospital two days later.

The court said that while there is no evidence Van der P deliberately gave drugs to the baby, her actions were responsible for her death.
