Marc Overmars, who left Amsterdam football club Ajax for sexually harassing female members of staff, is joining Belgian football club Antwerp FC as technical director.
Overmars left Ajax at the beginning of February after a number of women came forward to say he had broken acceptable boundaries. In one case, he had sent photos of his private parts to a female worker.
Antwerp manager Sven Jaecques said the arrival of Overmars would be an enormous boost for the club. ‘This is not something we have made a quick decision about,’ he said. ‘We were looking for someone who fitted the club and its ambitions.’
Asked about Overmars’ departure from Ajax, Jaecques said: ‘We have listened to what has happened and explained our standards. There was a match. It is important to give people new chances.’
Overmars said he was sorry about what had happened and that he now wanted to get on with his life. ‘It will not happen again,’ he was quoted as saying by broadcaster NOS.
